Jack Pine and Hannah Shira Naiman at Pressed Nov. 12

Toronto banjo player and singer-songwriter Hannah Shira Naiman is celebrating the release of her sophomore album “Know The Mountain” with a multicity tour.

With a sound that sits between Gillian Welch and Sarah Harmer, Naiman’s original songs ring with influences of Ola Belle Reed, The Carter Family, American old time, and traditional English ballads.

Produced by Don Kerr, the album builds on Naiman’s acclaimed debut record Tether My Heart (2013) and delivers an even more bold, layered, and mature collection of songs. Many of the songs on the album came out of Naiman’s time in Virginia and West Virginia studying oldtime fiddle music. They reflect Naiman’s wide ranging influences from appalachian traditions¬†to contemporary female songwriters like Tori Amos and Ani Difranco.

Sharing the bill is Ottawa’s own Jack Pine. Since the release of “Lone Wolf”, Jack has gone back to the woods to collect new songs. Jack plays acoustically and passionately, with intense dynamics. It’s a performance that’s soulful, alive, and raw. His songs belie his empathy for the underdog, a deep-seated respect for nature, his wry sense of humour and his love of the mandolin.
